“Transfers & Grunge” – image transfer and mixed-media collage on wood
Have you ever wanted to incorporate meaningful photographs, portraits, or printed images into your mixed-media projects in a truly artistic way? Would you like to learn a versatile technique that opens up endless creative possibilities while creating a rich, dimensional collage full of character and depth?
In “Transfers & Grunge”, we’ll combine image transfer techniques with my signature approach to mixed-media layering, creating a striking collage that balances delicate imagery with bold textures and dimensional details. This project is a beautiful meeting point of art journaling, traditional mixed-media, and dimensional collage, bringing together a variety of techniques into one cohesive and inspiring piece.
Working step by step, we’ll begin by transferring images directly onto a wooden panel using Art Basics Soft Gel, one of my favourite and most versatile image transfer mediums. You’ll learn how to achieve beautiful transferred effects while embracing the unique imperfections, subtle textures, and vintage charm that make every transfer truly one of a kind.
Once our image is in place, we’ll build the project layer by layer, enhancing the story of the image with carefully arranged clusters of embellishments, found objects, and dimensional details. There will be plenty of opportunities to experiment with colour and expressive finishing techniques, including stamping, splatters, drips, highlights, and other creative effects that add atmosphere and artistic character. Multiple colour options of Liquid Acrylic Paints will be available, allowing you to personalise your project and create a mood that reflects your own style and creative vision.
This class is perfect for anyone who would like to gain confidence with image transfers while exploring a wide range of mixed-media techniques. The skills and ideas presented can easily be adapted to journals, canvases, panels, and many other surfaces, making this a valuable addition to your creative toolbox.
Suitable for all skill levels, from beginners to experienced mixed-media artists.
Class time: about 4 hours.
